Beautiful antique Eastern Orthodox icon depicting multiple saints with Christ Pantocrator above, painted on a substantial wood panel with a gold-toned ground.
An old identification label on the reverse identifies the figures as Saint Simeon the Stylites, Saint Alexiy the man of God, Saint Jacob, Saint Pantelemon, and Saint John "The Golden-mouthed" (John Chrysostom), and Christ Pantocrator above. The same label identifies the icon as 19th century and shows an old price of $800.
Of particular interest is an original Lithuanian cultural-property export authorization remaining on the reverse, apparently issued through the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture/Department for the Protection of Cultural Properties. Faint old handwriting inscriptions also remain on the wood; their language and wording have not been independently identified or translated.
Measurements: Approximately 10.1" X 7.9" X 1.4"
The icon has considerable age-related character and wear, including craquelure, areas of paint loss, scratches, edge wear, surface marks and natural again and cracking of the wood panel. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.
The icon has not been cleaned or restored by the current owner.
