The Freitas family legacy began with Manuel Freitas, an immigrant from the Azores who settled in Watsonville before purchasing land in San Juan Bautista around the turn of the 20th century. He cultivated apples, pears, cherries, prunes, and walnuts, eventually expanding his farm to 100 acres. His sons, including Antone A. Freitas (1912–2000), carried on the family tradition.
Though most of the orchards have since been replaced by row crops, a few acres of Fuji apples still grow behind the Freitas family home.
