DescriptionPublished in 1925 (Taisho 14), this antique Japanese photo book presents the Imperial Palace and other places closely connected with the Japanese Imperial Household.The original Japanese title is Kyūjō Shashinchō — Imperial Palace Photo Album — and the photographs were supplied with the cooperation of the Imperial Household Ministry.The book includes photographs and descriptions of the Imperial Palace, ceremonial interiors, Imperial residences, detached palaces, the Meiji Shrine, and other spaces associated with the Imperial Household.What makes this book especially interesting is the moment in Japanese history in which it was published.In 1925, Japan’s monarch was Emperor Taisho, the father of Hirohito. However, Emperor Taisho’s declining health had made it difficult for him to continue carrying out his full official duties.As a result, Crown Prince Hirohito had been appointed Prince Regent in 1921.Emperor Taisho remained on the throne, but the young Hirohito was already performing many of the functions of the Emperor on his father’s behalf.This therefore comes from a fascinating transitional period — Hirohito was not yet Emperor Showa, but he was already at the center of Japan’s Imperial institutions.That context gives these photographs an unusual significance.This is not a personal album documenting Hirohito’s everyday life.
