Antique Mercury / Hermes Radiator Mascot Hood Ornament
Unusual early automobile radiator mascot depicting Mercury (Roman) / Hermes (Greek) wearing a dramatic winged helmet.
This is a substantial, heavy casting weighing approximately2 lb 5 oz. The figure itself is non-magnetic; the mounting hardware/post contains magnetic steel. The metal appears to be a plated nonferrous alloy, possibly brass or bronze, but the exact composition has not been tested.
Approximately5" tall overall. The head/helmet measures approximately3" x 4".
The underside retains its mounting assembly, including a square mounting plate and long hollow internally threaded post. No manufacturer name, part number, or other identifying marks have been found.
Based on its design and construction, this appears consistent with an automobile radiator mascot from approximately the1920s–1930s. Exact age, manufacturer, and vehicle application are unknown. It isnot being represented as a factory Ford, Packard, REO, or other specific automobile manufacturer's ornament.
Provenance:This piece came from the long-stored automobile-related belongings of the seller's grandfather, who worked in the automobile business beginning in the late 1920s and later operated automobile dealerships. It had been in family storage for more than 40 years.
Condition:Good antique condition with age-related wear, scratches, oxidation/patina, discoloration and areas of plating/finish wear. Small areas of green oxidation/verdigris are visible around the mounting hardware. The ornament has not been polished or restored. Please examine all photographs closely as they are part of the condition description.
An unusual piece of early automotive memorabilia and radiator-mascot history.
