Attributed to the Schrezheim Faience Factory (Ellwangen, Germany) - Circa 1760-1780
Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible 18th-century German Faience pear-shaped lidded jug (Birnkrug). This piece features a striking, vibrant turquoise-blue glaze ground—a highly desirable signature color palette characteristic of the historic Schrezheim factory.
Design & Details:
• Form: Classic twisted/ribbed body pear-shaped design (\"Birnkrug\").
• Decoration: Exquisitely hand-painted folk art motif on the front featuring a rural peasant figure or field laborer working amidst rustic vegetation.
• Pewter Mounts: Completely outfitted with historic pewter hardware, including a form-fitting base rim (Standring), a heavy protective hinge, strap handle attachment, and a dominant lid completed with a baluster-shaped finial.
• Monogram: The top of the pewter lid is sharply hand-engraved with cursive \"M. M.\" initials of an early owner.
• Markings: In keeping with standard mid-18th-century production practices at Schrezheim, the base is left unglazed and unmarked.
Dimensions:
• Height: 9.25 inches to the top of the lid finial
• Width: Approximately 5 inches at the widest part of the body
• Base Diameter: 3.25 inchesCondition Report:
This is an authentic antique piece of pottery over 250 years old. It displays beautifully with a rich, glossy glaze. In the interest of full transparency for collectors, the following age-related wear is noted:
• Glaze chips, flakes, and typical firing pits are present, primarily visible along the upper rim lip and under the pewter mount attachments where the underlying reddish clay body is exposed.
• The pewter lid assembly has a slight, minor wobble at the hinge fitting.
• The pewter protective ring around the base is slightly loose but remains completely attached and secure.
No major modern restorations or breaks detected. Please review the close-up photos closely to assess the honest historic wear.
