This is an antique 1878 bank check from the Merchants National Bank of New York, uniquely stamped "COLD" to indicate it was payable in gold coin. Issued by the prominent pharmaceutical and trading firm Lanman & Kemp, the check features an ornate purple vignette and a printed two-cent internal revenue tax stamp. It represents a fascinating piece of Reconstruction-era financial history, reflecting the post-Civil War transition back to the gold standard.
