Antique 19th-Century Folk Art Treen Trick / Puzzle Sliding Match Safe & Striker
An intriguing 19th-century (circa 1860–1890) folk art pocket match safe / vesta box hand-carved from solid hardwood treen. Designed as a \"trick\" or mystery opening puzzle box, the lid features two interlocked diagonal sections fitted with raised turned wooden knobs.
Sliding the interlocking top section reveals an original inset abrasive striker pad on an intermediate shelf. Shifting the mechanism further exposes the hollowed lower match storage chamber beneath. The top is handsomely decorated with an incised foliate crest cartouche and a repeating border.
