Research / AI Generated: This image shows a single page from The Antikamnia Calendar for 1900, a famously macabre series of promotional calendars issued by the Antikamnia Chemical Company of St. Louis, Missouri.🔎 Context & History

• The Artwork: This specific sheet covers Mayand June 1900. It features a detailed caricature of a skeleton dressed as a dangerous dandy thug "Looking for Another 'Button'"."On the button"- - Refers to the point of the chin (the target for a knockout punch in boxing). The artwork was created by Dr. Louis Crusius (1862–1898), a local St. Louis pharmacist, physician, and talented anatomist known for his dark, humorous "Skeleton Sketches".
• The Product: Antikamnia (which translates from Greek to "Opposed to Pain") was marketed heavily to doctors and medical professionals between 1897 and 1901. Despite being presented as a safe, proud remedy for headaches, fever, and insomnia, its primary active ingredient was acetanilide, a toxic coal-tar derivative that caused severe blood disorders and organ damage.
• The Irony: Today, these calendars are highly prized by collectors of medical ephemera and vintage quack medicine advertising. The macabre skull motifs—intended originally as lighthearted medical humor for doctor waiting rooms—proved darkly prophetic, as the toxic medication often led to the illness or death of its users. The company eventually collapsed following regulations introduced by the Pure Food and Drug Act of the Legendary Steve Rotman Ephemera Collection / MORE GREAT Victorian Trade Cards to come!Steve Rotman assembled one of the most substantial card collections in the world.
