Frederick Douglass (1818–1895), legendary abolitionist, author, newspaper editor, and statesman whose writings and speeches made him one of the most influential voices of the nineteenth century. Born into slavery in Maryland, Douglass escaped bondage in 1838 and rose to international prominence as a leading advocate for emancipation, equal rights, and social reform. He later served in several federal appointments.
Partly-printed deed signed clearly by Douglass at the conclusion in ink. In good condition. Light toning from age.
Autographed legal documents signed by Douglass are uncommon and highly desirable, particularly those connected to his personal affairs and life in Washington, D.C., where he spent his later years at Cedar Hill in Anacostia. As one of the most important figures in American history, material bearing Douglass’s signature remains avidly sought by collectors of abolition, African American history, and presidential-era Americana.
