Shanghai Tang produced luxury gifts and home decor items in Hong Kong, inspired by traditional Chinese craftsmanship and culture. These sets were made in the late twentieth century as decorative objects and novelty gifts for those interested in Asian art and divination. The items were crafted using traditional motifs and materials, with branded gift packaging designed to appeal to international shoppers seeking high-end souvenirs.

People used these sets for fortune telling and as decorative display pieces in homes and offices. The sticks were shaken in the cylinder until one fell out, and its number was checked against a guidebook to reveal a prophecy or answer a question. Over time, such sets became popular lifestyle accessories rather than working tools for traditional rituals, often given as presents or kept as curiosities.
