The division was activated on the 14th of July, 1943 at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. Advanced elements of the division disembarked at Marseille, Dec 8-9 1944 entering the European Theater of Operations.The division participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. The division attacked the Siegfried Line at Baerenthal on 15 March, 1945. They entered Germany on 18 March. The division served under one commander during its combat tour, Major General Harry Collins. The division participated in the liberation of Dachau Concentration camp with the 20th Armored and 45th Infantry Divisions. They fought across the Rhine, the Main, the Danube and the Inn RIvers into Austria by 5 May, 1946, at Salzburg at the end of hostilities. They were inactivated in Austria 29 June, 1946
