Calcite in general belongs to the calcite groupof minerals and are composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), sometimes with impuritiesof iron, magnesium, or manganese, and occasionally zinc and cobalt. All members of the calcite groupcrystallizein thetrigonalsystem, have perfectrhombohedral cleavage, and exhibit strongdouble refractionin transparent rhombohedrons.
Calcite is derived from the German Calcit, a term coined in the 19th century from the Latin word for lime, calx (genitive calcis) with the suffix -ite used to name minerals. They are colorless or white when pure, but can be yellow, brown, orange, pink, red, purple, blue, green, gray, black or even multicolored due to impurities and inclusions. They have a vitreous (glassy) to pearly luster.
Crystals may betabular, acicular, prismatic, flaky, and needle-like. May occur as bundles of scalenohedrons, intergrown rhombohedrons or they can be hair-like masses of acicular crystals, grainy, stalactitic, fibrous, massive, and earthy. Scalenohedral twinning is common.
Thetwo associated minerals in this featured specimen are Pyrite and Marcasite. ThePyrite, which is sometimes called Fools Gold because of its similarity in colorand shape to Gold, have a metallic luster. Pyrite occurs in numerous shapes andhabits. Marcasite is a polymorph of pyrite, meaning it has the same chemicalformula (iron sulfide, FeS2) but a different crystal structure. They havean orthorhombic crystal system, compared to Pyrite, which is more of an Isometric(cubic) structure. Marcasite crystals are generally pale bronze-yellow tosilvery-white on fresh surfaces; tarnishes easily to a brownish or iridescentcolor. They have a metallic luster when fresh and submetallic after tarnish. Inthis featured specimen, they both appear as sprinkles of sparkling micro crystallinepyrite and marcasite dusted on the surface of the calcites.

This specimen looks better in person inorder to appreciateits shape, pearly/vitreous luster, and formationhabits, which can be difficult to capture in its entirety on camera. Color maybe a little different due to the color calibration of each individual monitoror light levels.
**As with all genuine mineral specimens, there may be natural occurring inclusions, formations and impressions, imperfections, incomplete growths.
