The Specimen:
This is an exceptionally dense, heavy-duty Galena specimen sourced from the historic Palmer Mines. Weighing in at a massive 1 lb 1.8 oz for a compact 3-inch footprint, this piece is a perfect example of the extreme density of raw lead ore.
In daylight, the display face offers a beautiful, rugged contrast. The sharp, stepped 90-degree cubic cleavage of the Galena throws off brilliant, mirror-like silver flashes against a vibrant, earthy ochre and rusty-brown host matrix. Deep vugs reveal secondary crystalline growth, while the Galena faces show patches of natural weathering and alteration.
The true magic of this specimen is its highly unusual and explosive response under UV light. While many pieces from this locale have a single-color reaction, this matrix lights up with a spectacular tri-color display:
Peach: Crystalline Calcite tucked into the deep crevices and vugs glows a vivid peach/pink.
Light Blue: Thin crusts of secondary alteration (likely Cerussite or Barite) along the Galena faces fluoresce a ghostly light blue.
Yellow: Patches of associated Anglesite glow a bright, striking yellow.
It is an incredibly dynamic, structurally complex piece that will stand out instantly in any daylight or blacklight collection.
