Offered here is a scarce group of 21 antique miniature playing cards attributed to C.L. Wüst of Frankfurt, Germany, dating to approximately c.1890.These belong to an unusual miniature theatrical or scenic playing-card design produced by Wüst, featuring wonderfully detailed scenic Aces and full-length historical court figures rather than the much simpler imagery found on ordinary miniature decks.The surviving cards measure approximately 35 × 24 mm, making them true miniature playing cards.Particularly attractive are the illustrated Aces, which incorporate the suit symbol into elaborate landscape and theatrical scenes. The surviving court cards feature vividly colored period figures set against architectural and landscape backgrounds. This is a 21-card partial group from an originally larger pack. A documented example of this Wüst pattern carries the manufacturer’s identification on the 4 of Spades; that maker card is not present in this surviving group.The cards retain strong red, blue, green and yellow coloring despite their considerable age. The backs are plain and matching.
