1984 Michael Jordan Jumpman Large Format 2-Page Photo Spread Jacobus Rentmeester
In 1984, LIFE commissioned photographer Jacobus “Co” Rentmeester to shoot Michael Jordan early in his career. This photo, a dramatic, legs-splayed leap with a basketball became known as the iconic Jumpman photo and beganmodern sports branding. Nike saw the photo andPeter Moore, the Nike creative director responsible for the look of the Air Jordan line, paid Rentmeester $150 for two transparencies of this photo. Nike then created a similar image, its version showing Jordan jumping in nearly the same pose. From that photo it would derive the Jumpman logo and iswidely cited as the originating “template” that Nike’s Jumpman branding echoes.
The proceeding use by Nike to create the Jumpman logo became a major copyright case. Rentmeester sued Nike alleging infringement; the Ninth Circuit ultimately sided with Nike, in simple terms holding that the protectable elements of his photo weren’t substantially similar in the way copyright requires.
In late 2025, Rentmester sold an edition of 20 prints of this photo, plus two Artist Prints, for what I consider to be a steal at approximately $5200 US dollars.
