1960’s Muhammad Ali "Training During the Liston Era" PSA Type 1 Original Photo:
$1150.00

For Sale is an Incredible 1960’s Muhammad Ali PSA Type 1 Original Photo! This powerful 1960s photograph captures a young Muhammad Ali during the era surrounding his historic rivalry with Sonny Liston, photographed by Derek Rowe of Photos Ltd. Standing inside the ring after what appears to have been a grueling training session, Ali is stripped to the waist in white Everlast trunks, his gloves still on and his body glistening with sweat. There is none of the showmanship normally associated with Ali here; instead, his lowered gloves, intense expression and visibly exhausted appearance reveal the physical work taking place behind the famous confidence and charisma. The photograph has been authenticated by PSA as an Original Photograph, Type I, dated circa the 1960s.

The Liston period marked the transformation of the young Cassius Clay into heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. Training under Angelo Dundee, Clay prepared for the heavily favored Sonny Liston before shocking the boxing world on February 25, 1964, when Liston remained on his stool following the sixth round and the 22-year-old challenger captured the heavyweight championship. Ali’s training during this period was famously demanding; accounts of his Miami Beach preparation describe long sessions in the 5th Street Gym and a work ethic that Dundee summarized simply: “He worked as hard as he talked.” Photographs of Clay training for the first Liston fight also document him working inside the ring at the 5th Street Gym in February 1964.

The Shot is 6x6.25i and is Encapsulated and Authenticated by PSA as a Type 1 Original Photo! What makes this photograph so compelling is how far removed it feels from the polished image of Ali that history remembers. There is no celebration and no opponent lying on the canvas, only a young fighter standing in the ring, gloves still on and sweat covering his body after the work was done. The Derek Rowe credit and PSA Type I authentication give the image an important period connection, while the photograph itself captures the physical preparation behind Ali’s rise during the Liston era. It is a quiet portrait of the discipline that helped turn an extraordinarily gifted young contender into the heavyweight champion of the world.
