1946 Operation Crossroads “Baker Day Atomic Bomb” PSA Type 1 Original Photo:
$1300.00

For Sale is an Awesome 1946 Baker Day Atomic Bomb PSA Type 1 Original Photo! This extraordinary July 25, 1946 photograph captures the Baker atomic test during Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, viewed from a remarkable position directly above the detonation. Rather than the more familiar side views showing Baker’s enormous column of water rising into the sky, this photograph looks almost vertically down upon the event, revealing the rapidly expanding circular cloud and disturbance surrounding the point of detonation. The unusual aerial perspective transforms the explosion into an enormous ring spreading across the ocean, providing a striking view of the scale and symmetry of the blast. The PSA label identifies the image as “Operation Crossroads – Baker Day, Bikini Atoll 07/25/46” and authenticates the photograph as a Type I Original Photograph dating to circa 1946.

Operation Crossroads was conducted by the United States in 1946 to study the effects of atomic weapons on naval vessels and military equipment. Baker was the second detonation of the operation, following the Able test on July 1. A plutonium weapon with a yield of roughly 23 kilotons was suspended beneath the surface of Bikini Lagoon and detonated approximately 90 feet underwater. The explosion produced an enormous underwater shock wave, lifted millions of tons of water into the air and generated a massive base surge that engulfed many of the target ships positioned around the blast. Because of the radioactive contamination created by the underwater detonation, Baker also became an important early demonstration of the lingering radiological consequences of nuclear weapons.

The Shot is 8x10in and is Authenticated and Encapsulated by PSA as a Type 1 Original Photo! What makes this photograph particularly fascinating is its rare straight-down perspective on one of the most famous nuclear tests in history. Most surviving images of Baker emphasize the towering wall and column of water from the horizon; here, the viewer instead sees the event unfolding as an expanding circular formation across Bikini Lagoon. Taken less than a year after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and at the beginning of the nuclear age, this photograph is an extraordinary photographic record of the moment the United States was beginning to understand the immense physical and radiological effects of atomic weapons.
