Original June 13, 1945 Office of Price Administration (OPA) War Price and Rationing Board news letter, issued from Augusta, Maine, consisting of a 6-page stapled bulletin. The sheets measure approximately standard letter size and are printed in a typewritten mimeograph format typical of wartime government circulars.
This issue (No. 123) includes “Chester Bowles’ Weekly Letter”, along with multiple sections covering wartime rationing policy and enforcement. Notable topics include:
- Sugar rationing and the crackdown on “Sugar Racketeers”
- Gasoline rationing and the continuation of restrictions after V-E Day
- Meat supply controls for hospitals and institutions
- Restaurant ration reductions and civilian consumption limits
- Price controls on used cars, fabrics, and other goods
- Enforcement actions against black market violations in Maine
A standout feature is the bold “BUY NOW! WAR LOAN” graphic illustration on the front page, showing figures raising a flag—classic wartime propaganda imagery.
Chester Bowles, a key national figure in wartime price control (later Governor of Connecticut), signs the letter, adding historical significance.
