This lot includes the original illustrated “Major Cities of Japan – A Graphic Survey for Civil Affairs Officers” master portfolio together with 8 original maps from the Osaka and Kyoto surveys:
- Osaka – 7 maps
- Kyoto – 1 map
- 8 maps total
- Original master portfolio included
These maps were prepared for U.S. Civil Affairs / military-government personnel during the closing period of World War II to provide detailed information about major Japanese urban areas and their infrastructure.
PLEASE NOTE: This is an incomplete group. The documented Osaka survey contained 10 maps and the Kyoto survey contained 9 maps. This lot contains 7 of the Osaka maps and 1 Kyoto map. No other city maps are included.
The original master portfolio is particularly attractive, with a map of Japan on the front and graphic symbols representing manpower, industry, transport, power and resources. It shows expected age and handling wear, including creasing and edge/corner wear; please see photographs. The maps themselves are in very nice condition for their age.
An unusual surviving group of WWII Pacific Theater material with interest for collectors of World War II cartography, Japan, U.S. Civil Affairs, military-government material, Occupation-era history and military maps.
You will receive exactly the original portfolio and 8 maps shown in the photographs. Please review all photos for contents and condition.
