Original World War II handwritten letter dated August 24, 1944, written from the South Pacific by Pfc. John L. Omnieuski to his sweetheart Josephine Zuchi in Erie, Pennsylvania.
This substantial 10-page wartime letter combines a deeply affectionate message to the woman Johnny calls her “future loving husband” with unusually vivid references to his experiences in the service.
Near the end of the letter, Johnny discusses the dangers he has survived. He credits his faith and the “Good Lord” with protecting and guiding him through these experiences.
Earlier in the letter, Johnny reflects on his relationship with Josephine, their correspondence while he has been overseas, his departure for military service, writing to her from Hawaii, attending church whenever possible, and his hopes of returning home so they can have a life together.
The original airmail envelope is included. It is addressed to Miss Josephine Zuchi of Erie, PA and bears a U.S. Army Postal Service APO cancellation dated August 26, 1944, along with an Army Examiner marking. Johnny’s return address identifies him as Pfc. John L. Omnieuski, Co. E, 35th Infantry, APO 25.
A compelling piece of WWII history documenting both the personal relationship maintained through wartime correspondence and the combat experiences of an American serviceman in the South Pacific.
Letter consists of 10 handwritten numbered pages plus the original envelope. Pages show expected age, handling and toning consistent with an approximately 82-year-old wartime letter. Please review all photos for condition and content.
Part of a larger original WWII correspondence between Johnny and Josephine. Other letters from this correspondence may be available separately.
