Original WWII handwritten love letter dated February 7, 1944, written by Pfc. John “Johnny” Omiecinski of Company E, 35th Infantry, APO 25, to his sweetheart Josephine in Erie, Pennsylvania.
A particularly poignant letter in this correspondence, Johnny writes extensively about their future together and his plans to marry Josephine after the war. He tells her he is confident she will be his wife in the near future, asks for her thoughts about their future life together, and says his mother, father, brother and sister already know that he intends to marry her after the war.
Johnny also writes about attending dances and movies, remembering the dances he and Josephine attended together, showing her photograph to his friends, and wishing she were there with him. He asks her to send several everyday items including a cigarette lighter, cigarettes, Colgate dental cream and stamped envelopes.
The airmail envelope bears a U.S. Army APO postmark and a PASSED BY U.S. ARMY EXAMINER 03306 censorship stamp. The letter itself also bears an additional purple wartime examiner/censorship marking dated 1944.
Of particular historical interest, Johnny dated this letter February 7, 1944, while postal/censorship markings on the letter is dated May 1944, approximately three months later. The reason for the delay is unknown.
Johnny did not survive the war, adding historical context and poignancy to his letters discussing marriage and the future he hoped to share with Josephine.
