The American forces of the 4th Armored Division and elements of the VIII Corps entered Coutances, France, on July 28 and 29, 1944, respectively. The town was found heavily damaged by prior Allied aerial bombardment that was part of Operation Cobra, the breakout offensive from the Normandy beachhead.
