An original and historically interesting Jewish commercial invoice from Cairo, Egypt, dated 12 May 1941, issued during the Second World War.
The document provides a fascinating glimpse into Jewish commercial life in Egypt in the first half of the 20th century.
Details of the document
The printed Arabic heading identifies the business/name as Rofael (Raphaël) Strouma / Struma, with the address given in Cairo:
شارع بيبرس بالحمزاوى بمصر
Baybars Street, Al-Hamzawi, Cairo, Egypt.
A prominently printed Magen David (Star of David) appears on the document, indicating the Jewish identity of the business.
The invoice is dated:
12 May 1941
The document contains a handwritten commercial entry in the goods section, together with the prices and total amount.
Egyptian Revenue Stamp
An original Egyptian revenue/fiscal stamp is affixed to the lower right portion of the invoice. The stamp bears the portrait of King Farouk I of Egypt, who was King of Egypt at the time.
The stamp has been cancelled/validated with an ink signature, and the handwritten Arabic word:
خالصة
meaning approximately “Paid / Settled”.
The invoice is denominated in the contemporary Egyptian currency, using piastres (qurush) and para. The total shown on the document is 1,104 piastres.
Historical & Collecting Interest
This is an appealing piece of Judaica / Jewish history from Egypt, documenting Jewish commercial activity in Cairo before the mass departure of Egypt\'s Jewish population in the mid-20th century.
