Wonderful vintage photograph album containing slightly over 100 original photographs, with the collection devoted almost entirely to animals — approximately 95–98% of the photographs feature dogs, along with a small number of cats and at least one rabbit. There are very few photographs of people, making this an unusually focused early pet and dog photography collection.
One of the best features of the album is that many of the dogs are identified by name, and in several cases their breed or type is also recorded. Names appearing in the album include Big Shot, Buddy, Flea Bite, Chip, Lucky, Peggy, Polly, Puck, Poochie, Pat, Rusty, Smut, Spike, Tip, Teddy and Terry, among others.
Identified dogs include Big Shot, a terrier; Buddy, a black-and-white pointer; Chip, a brown-and-white setter; and Lucky and Peggy, both German Shepherds. These handwritten identifications give the album considerably more personality and historical interest than a typical unidentified snapshot album.
The photographs show the dogs in a variety of settings and poses and provide a fascinating look at American pet ownership, dog breeds and everyday animal photography of the period. With more than 100 photographs concentrated so heavily on dogs, this appears to have been assembled by someone with a particularly strong interest in their animals rather than as a conventional family photograph album.
There is also a Raleigh, North Carolina sticker on the inside front cover. The album itself was acquired in Raleigh, strongly suggesting that this is a North Carolina-associated photograph album.
