1935 Press Photo Plinio Salgado Brazil Fascist Integralist Leader Communist:
$124.95

This photograph is part of a much larger and wonderfully eclectic collection of photos and documents acquired in Europe several years ago. The acid-free collection sticker on the verso is part of the previous owner’s personal collection and catalog system.

Up for sale is an original 1935 International News Photos wire service press photograph of Plinio Salgado (center), founder and leader of the Brazilian Integralist Action party — the largest fascist movement in Latin American history. The complete original wire service caption on the verso identifies Salgado and two aides photographed upon their return to Rio de Janeiro from an airplane tour of northern Brazil, following the failed Communist Revolt of November 1935. The caption notes that Salgado had offered 100,000 Integralist men in arms to President Getúlio Vargas to crush the uprising, and that the three men are offering “the typical fascist salute.” The print carries the Examiner Reference Library received stamp dated December 14, 1935, confirming direct newspaper archive provenance.

Plinio Salgado modeled his Integralist movement closely on European fascism — his followers wore green shirts and used the sigma (Σ) as their symbol. At its peak the movement claimed over one million members, making it one of the largest fascist organizations outside of Europe. Salgado’s complex relationship with Vargas ultimately led to the banning of the Integralists in 1938 following a failed coup attempt. Original contemporary press photographs documenting this pivotal moment in Brazilian political history — shot in the immediate aftermath of the Communist Revolt — are extraordinarily scarce outside of Brazilian institutional archives.

Condition: Warping and age-related wear consistent with the period. Caption slip intact and fully legible. Please examine all provided photos carefully. Guaranteed old and original.

Disclaimer: Item details, identification, and historical context are based on the seller’s personal research and best assessment. Buyers are ultimately purchasing the physical photograph pictured, in the condition shown. No additional authentication is implied or warranted.
