1934 Clinton MA Boston & Maine Train Wreck Locomotive Glass Negatives (2) OOAK
Pair of original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique 4x5 gelatin silver glass plate negatives captured on November 3, 1934: a gripping Massachusetts industrial disaster sequence: the catastrophic Boston and Maine Railroad freight train derailment in Clinton, Massachusetts, documenting the massive overturned steam locomotive, shattered freight cars, and an immense crowd of local townspeople and wrecking crews.
Accompanied by its original vintage tan kraft darkroom morgue filing sleeve with contemporary newsroom documentation:
Historical & Railroad Analysis:
During the 1930s, the Boston and Maine Railroad operated heavy freight runs connecting central Massachusetts manufacturing towns with regional junction points. High speed, mechanical axle failure, or track spread along the hilly curves near Clinton resulted in this violent pile-up, hurling the multi-ton steam locomotive off the roadbed and jackknifing heavily loaded freight cars behind it. The crash drew immediate coverage from Boston newspapers and brought hundreds of local residents to the woodland cut to view the destruction.
Captured on the scene with remarkable structural detail and tonal gradation by Boston Herald-Traveler staff photojournalist Leslie Jones:
Plate 1 — Undercarriage & Mechanical Ruins: A powerful perspective looking up into the belly of the overturned locomotive. Visible are the heavy drive rods, leaf springs, crosshead guides, brake cylinders, and pressurized air tanks, while a sheared wheel axle rests half-buried in the ballast ties. Wrecking crewmen and railroad mechanics in denim caps and mackinaw jackets stand on the cab and boiler surveying the mechanical wreckage.
Plate 2 — Panoramic Scene & Crowd Gathering: An expansive hillside view showing the full aftermath of the disaster along the embankment. The fallen steam engine rests in the foreground while splintered boxcars accordion into a massive wall of debris against the forest backdrop. Flanking the tracks is a massive assembly of over a hundred spectators in Great Depression-era fedoras, newsboy caps, and wool topcoats, gathered alongside rail officials directing emergency recovery operations.
Press Camera Resolution: Razor-sharp focus throughout, capturing individual telegraph pole insulator pins, twisted track rails, steam fittings, and expressive facial details across the gathered crowd.
