Guglielmo Marconi, father of radio, declared in an address in Italy that he believed radio waves of the "beam" type travel far beyond the layer of air surrounding the Earth. Thus, the beam may aid in solving the secrets of the universe.
The diagram on the left shows the two kinds of radio waves that are purely terrestrial: first, the ground wave that follows the surface of the Earth, and second, the echo wave that leaps to the Heaviside layer, 100 miles above the Earth.
The diagram on the right shows how the beam wave can travel through space. It is believed that this wave can travel in a straight line and penetrate the Heaviside layer of ionized air to continue on into space.
Just how far they go is largely conjecture, but it is estimated between 25 million and 48 million miles. Even with a comparatively short range, a good many heavenly bodies could be reached, thus making possible "exploration" of the nearby heavenly bodies while future developments open the door for a new vista by science.Photo is Dated: November 12, 1931.
