Excellent large vintage maritime photograph of the steamship HAWAIIANat Kelso, Oregon on the Columbia River in August 1929.
The vessel's name HAWAIIAN is clearly visible on the bow.
The handwritten period inscription on the reverse reads approximately:
"1929 - August -Kelso - Oregon -on Columbia River4th mate"
The photograph also bears a period "MT. TOM PHOTO CONTEST / HOLYOKE,MASS." stamp along with an additional photographer-related Springfield,Massachusetts stamp.
Research identifies SS Hawaiian as an American-Hawaiian SteamshipCompany ocean-going steam freighter built in 1919.
Government records describe Hawaiian as a 404.6-foot steel single-screwsteam freighter of 6,264 gross tons with extensive cargo-handling gear.
This is an especially desirable maritime photograph because the vessel, location and date are preserved directly on the photograph rather thanhaving to be inferred.
