Original 1927 Thos. D. Murphy Co. advertising calendar from Red Oak, Iowa, promoting the company’s famous “Art in Advertising” calendars.
This impressive oversized advertising piece reads “WAIT FOR THE MURPHY SALESMAN” across the top and features a large colorful Western mountain scene titled “On the Trail in the High Sierras,” depicting Native American riders traveling through a dramatic mountain landscape.
The center reads:
THE THOS. D. MURPHY CO.
ART IN ADVERTISING
RED OAK, IOWA – The Birthplace of the Art Calendar Industry
An original December 1927 calendar sheet remains attached. Beneath the calendar is another wonderful color illustration showing an airplane view of the Thos. D. Murphy Co. factory and power plant in Red Oak.
The bottom reads “Monthly Service and Business Greetings.”
This appears to have been a promotional piece advertising the Murphy company itself and its calendar business rather than a calendar produced for an outside advertiser. The Thos. D. Murphy Co. was a major producer of advertising art calendars during the early 20th century.
Large display size measuring approximately 35–36” tall.
Condition: Original antique condition with age-related surface and edge wear, tears, creasing and losses, particularly along the edges and upper portion. Original metal hanging strip remains at the top. December 1927 calendar page is present. The piece is currently beneath/within clear protective plastic, which causes glare in the photographs. Please review all photos carefully for exact condition.
A striking piece of 1920s American advertising history with excellent crossover appeal for collectors of antique calendars, Thos. D. Murphy advertising, Red Oak Iowa memorabilia, Western imagery, early advertising and vintage printing ephemera.
Original 1927 piece — not a reproduction.
