THE ULTIMATE PROVENANCE: What makes this specific book an absolute prize for collectors is the original presentation label affixed to the inside: "Gift of the Hudson River Day Line - A.V.S. Olcott, President. April 1, 1949."'
HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Following the final shutdown of the historic Day Line operations at the close of the 1948 season, company president Alfred Van Santvoord (A.V.S.) Olcott spent early 1949 archiving corporate assets. On April 1, 1949, a tiny handful of these custom-bound volumes were created using leftover warehouse magazine stock to be gifted to high-profile institutions and VIPs. Most known copies reside in museums; finding a clean copy with this specific presidential label in private hands is exceptionally rare.
