1920s Novelty Stand Up Pontoon Watercraft Fisherman Odd Boat Glass Negative OOAK
Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique gelatin silver glass negative captured circa late 1920s to early 1930s: a delightfully eccentric slice of American folk engineering and novelty outdoor recreation: an inventor in a captain's cap and necktie fly-fishing while piloting a custom twin-hull stand-up pontoon watercraft ("Odd Boat") flying miniature American flags on an urban waterway.
Accompanied by its original vintage tan kraft darkroom morgue filing sleeve bearing contemporary newsroom documentation:
The Sleeve Inscription:
Name: Odd Boat
Historical & Contextual Significance:
During the interwar decades, metropolitan newspaper feature desks regularly dispatched press photographers to document backyard inventors and eccentric mechanical contraptions. This razor-sharp field exposure captures a quintessential Great Depression-era novelty: a home-built, human-powered catamaran float designed for solitary angling. Rather than sitting in a conventional rowboat, the fisherman stands tall on low-profile buoyancy floats, maneuvering via two upright control levers while working a fishing line beneath an arched municipal bridge.
Visual highlights preserved in the silver gelatin emulsion:
The "Odd Boat" Invention: Twin low-profile pontoons connected into a catamaran raft, fitted with raised foot-binding plates and vertical metal hand-crank or lever-drive steering uprights. Two small 48-star American flags fly proudly from flagstaffs mounted at the stern.
The Dapper Angler: The operator sports full period gentleman's attire—peaked yachting/mariner cap, round wire spectacles, dress shirt, necktie, buttoned waistcoat, and pleated slacks—holding a fly rod with line streaming toward the embankment.
The Setting: Mirrored calm water reflections under a massive concrete arched bridge, with an onlooker observing the spectacle from the grassy riverbank slope.
Tonal Fidelity: Continuous-tone silver gelatin gradation resolving the rippling water reflections, fabric drape of the trousers, wooden pontoon seams, and concrete balustrade data-path-to-node="18">
Format: Heavy antique silver gelatin press glass negative, exposed directly in a field camera circa 1925–1935.
Archive Ephemera: Accompanied by the original period tan kraft darkroom morgue filing envelope.

Very Good to Excellent antique condition. The heavy glass plate is structurally sound, stable, and completely intact with no cracks, chips, fractures, or glass breaks across the body.
