1920s Cambridge Harvard Auto Wreck Driver Sits on Ruin Car Glass Negative OOAK
Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique 4x5 gelatin silver glass plate negative captured circa 1924–1928: a remarkable piece of early automotive photojournalism documenting a catastrophic street collision outside Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts: an early motorcar obliterated against a curbside tree directly in front of a Harvard building, with the miraculously surviving driver sitting upright on the seat ruins, surrounded by onlookers and police.

During the Roaring Twenties, Boston Herald-Traveler photojournalist Leslie Jones became renowned throughout New England for his unflinching forensic documentation of vehicular mishaps, capturing the fragile engineering of early wood-and-steel automobiles when pushed to their limits on icy, streetcar-tracked roads.
Captured directly in-camera with extraordinary detail and balance:
The Wreckage: The vehicle’s front frame and engine block are crumpled like tin foil, the steering column sheared, wooden body framing splintered, and the driver's side front wheel crushed inward, while the rear wooden-spoke artillery wheel retains its winter snow chains. The Massachusetts license plate "476923" hangs twisted from the mangled front iron.
The Surviving Driver: Wearing a flat wool cap, heavy winter overcoat, and driving gloves, the driver sits motionless directly where the cab once stood, gazing calmly toward the crowd in apparent shock.
The Harvard Setting: A gathering of men and youths in trench coats, fedoras, and newsboy caps inspect the collision alongside an iron-wheeled trolley rail track in the street. The background clearly reveals the perimeter brick wall, mature trees, and distinctive multi-story brick architecture of a Harvard University building/dormitory bordering the Cambridge street.

Very Good antique condition. Heavy glass plate is structurally sound with no cracks, fractures, or perimeter breaks. Emulsion across the crumpled vehicle, seated driver, onlookers, street surface, and Harvard architectural facade is remarkably sharp, clean, and stable with rich tonal contrast. Displays only minor, authentic edge silvering and faint handling wear strictly along the extreme outer borders outside the primary image area. Accompanied by the original period kraft morgue filing sleeve and inner paper slip.
