1920s Anna Petrus for Svenskt Tenn Brass Matchbook Sleeve: Very Rare/Scarce: $232.79
Antique Swedish Grace Brass Matchbox SleeveDesign by Anna Petrus for Firma Svenskt Tenn This rare pocket accessory features a high-relief profile portrait of a woman, a celebrated signature motif created by the pioneering Swedish sculptor Anna Petrus. The design is a characteristic example of "Swedish Grace": the sophisticated, neoclassical Scandinavian movement that preceded high Art Deco. (Read more about the style in "Get To Know ‘Swedish Grace,’ The Little-Known Art Deco Design Movement" from Forbes.) While this iconic face profile is most famously documented on pewter boxes and caskets from Firma Svenskt Tenn (such as the collaborative pieces with Nils Fougstedt, pictured in the last two images), this specific variant is executed in a brass/bronze alloy. The piece measures approximately 2.25" × 1.5" × .77" (5.7 cm x 3.81 cm x 1.95 cm), matching the early 20th-century global standard for wooden pocket matchboxes. It can be confidently dated between 1925 and 1930 based on three historical factors: - It aligns with the peak fashion of the geometric, Garçonne or flapper bob hairstyle.
- It fits the tight cultural window of Swedish Grace before functionalism took over in 1930.
- Pocket matchbox sleeves became obsolete in the 1930s due to the rise of free cardboard matchbooks and pocket lighters.
Similarly, though it doesn't bear theFirma Svenskt Tenn stamp, several clues point to its style="box-sizing: border-box; padding-left: 2rem; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem;"> Unlike pewter, which was heavily regulated by Swedish state guild laws requiring control stamps and date letters, brass and bronze faced no mandatory hallmarking laws.To adapt her designs for durable pocket wear, Petrus’s motifs were outsourced to prominent Swedish brass/bronze specialists like Ystad-Metall, GAB, or Skultuna Messingsbruk. These foundries regularly left boutique gallery commissions and retail variants completely unmarked. As shown in the photos, the crisp, flawless definition of the relief lines rules out a modern reproduction or recast. Furthermore, the extensive, multidirectional micro-scratching on the reverse face and the layered, two-tone olive and gold oxidation point suggest a century of DetailsAny item that has free shipping will be noted as such in the item description.
