1919 Newtown, Texas Oil Boom Fire & Mud Flood Disaster

An Exceptionally Rare, Chronologically Intact 11-Card Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) Archive

Museum-quality, unbroken photographic archive consisting of eleven (11) original Real Photo Postcards documenting the historic, chaotic autumn of 1919 in the oil boomtown of Newtown (Wichita County), Texas.

Sourced directly from a private family estate, this collection serves as a spectacular step-by-step photo-documentary. Unlike scattered single postcards, this lot offers a rare, continuous narrative arc of a legendary Texas oil field disaster.

•••The Chronological Narrative Breakdown

The hand-captioned fronts map out a dramatic, month-long sequence of events:

*The Catalyst (Sept. 15, 1919): Captures the terrifying day-one blowout. "New Town Well on Fire Sept. 15th 1919" shows a massive, dark wall of roiling smoke choking out the sky next to a lone wooden derrick.

*The Fragile Boomtown (Sept. 30, 1919): A rare snapshot of daily life and vulnerable wooden infrastructure titled "Main St. New Town Sept. 30 - 19". Magnifier-visible details on the bustling storefronts include local establishments like the "Lone Star Taylor Shop," a "Drugs" store, and a fascinating "Cafe Tents Blankets Army" supply shop catering to the newly arrived "Rag Town" laborers.

*The Escalation (Oct. 4, 1919): The disaster spreads from individual wells to the massive storage infrastructure, captioned "Oil Tanks on Fire in New Town Oct. 4 - 19".

*The Climax & Chaos (Oct. 8, 1919): A multi-card series showcasing roughnecks actively "Fighting Fire Oct. 8-19" amidst smoking ruins, occurring simultaneously with a torrential Texas rainstorm that turns the town into an impassable river of mud ("Main St. After Rain in New Town Oct. 8-19").

*The Industrial & Human Context: Includes incredible character studies of the oil workers living in the local "Tent City" holding signs reading "Damn Good Town" and "The Hell It Is", alongside heavy Holt caterpillar tractors completely buried to their axles in deep mud, explicitly showcasing "The General Oil Co. - Houston Wichita Falls Big Springs" corporate lettering.

•••Paper & Authenticity Verification

Stamp Box Marks: All 11 cards feature unposted, blank, divided backs with the classic Kodak AZO stamp box (2 triangles pointing UP, 2 triangles pointing DOWN). This configuration definitively dates the photographic paper production to the 1918–1930 era, proving these are true period prints.

*Handcrafted Production Quirks: Highlighting the rustic, fast-paced nature of a field darkroom operating in a 1919 boomtown, several of the postcard backings were fed upside down during the manual printing press run.

*Reverse Markings: Two cards feature a vintage purple rubber stamp character ("B") on the reverse, likely an original photographer's mark or early field inventory stamp.

•••Provenance & Estate History

This unbroken 11-card archive was sourced directly from a private, multi-generational family estate. For decades, these photographs were meticulously preserved alongside early-to-mid 20th-century Texas oil corporate documents and stock certificates (including Liberty Oil and Engel Oil Co.). While the specific reason the original owner archived these exact photos remains lost to history, their preservation alongside regional oil stocks points to a deep, firsthand investment in the early Texas boomtowns.

•••Condition Report

All cards are in exceptional, crisp, unposted vintage condition. Borders and corners are clean and free of major creases or trimmings. The silvering and contrast of the photographic emulsion remain beautifully sharp and legible. Please review the high-resolution images provided to inspect individual card details.

•••Shipping & Handling

Due to the high historical value of this archive, the lot will be packed & boxed with extreme care, heavily reinforced and shipped fully insured via USPS Priority Mail. Will look into signature delivery as well.
