Chateau-Thierry
A Friendly Guide for American Pilgrims to the Shrines Between the Marne and the Vesle
By Sergeant Alexander Woollcott
Paris, 1919
Original WWI-era booklet
Condition: GoodOriginal post-Armistice guidebook by Sergeant Alexander Woollcott, written for American pilgrims and veterans visiting the World War I battlefield region between the Marne and the Vesle, including the Château-Thierry and Aisne-Marne area. The French national library record gives the full title and 1919 publication date; the work was issued in Paris shortly after the First World War for Americans traveling to visit American battle sites and cemeteries.Alexander Woollcott was a correspondent for the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes during World War I and later became a major American critic, radio personality, and member of the Algonquin Round Table. Chateau-Thierry is an early Woollcott book and a distinctive piece of American commemorative travel writing from the immediate aftermath of the war.Accompanying WWI-era document: Three-page typewritten letter titled “Reims — Past and Present,” attributed to the Sightseeing Department, Paris Division, American YMCA. The letter describes sightseeing and touring opportunities in the Reims area, including its historic and wartime associations. It is an unsigned office-issued document, held together with a thin nail, and appears to be an original or early postwar travel-information sheet rather than a signed personal letter.Reims was a major postwar destination for American visitors to the former Western Front, with sites including the Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims and the wider Champagne region. The enclosed YMCA sheet complements Woollcott’s guide by placing the battlefield pilgrimage within the broader postwar American travel experience in France.Condition: Good. Original 1919 booklet in sound collectible condition, with age and handling wear appropriate to a fragile wartime/postwar pamphlet. The accompanying three-page typewritten YMCA letter is present and legible, with the thin nail retaining the pages. Please review all photographs for the exact condition of the book.
