The pageant was presented at Roscoe Conkling Park in utica ny, August 5–8, 1914, in connection with the Utica Old Home Week Celebration.
Measures approximately 6 x 9 inches.
This is a substantial illustrated historical program rather than a simple event handbill. It contains extensive historical notes, the pageant text, casts of characters, participant names, musical selections and numerous photographic illustrations of performers in costume.
Subjects and episodes shown include the League of the Iroquois / Five Nations, Hiawatha and the formation of the League, Father Jogues, Dutch settlement and trade, Sir William Johnson and the Covenant Chain, early settlement of the Mohawk Valley, Palatine settlers, the Battle of Oriskany, General Nicholas Herkimer, Benedict Arnold and Fort Stanwix, Samuel Kirkland, Peter Smith, John Jacob Astor, Baron von Steuben, Welsh settlement, Hamilton College and other episodes in Utica and Mohawk Valley history.
Of particular interest is an abolition-related section describing the attempted 1861 anti-slavery convention in Utica, with a cast representing Susan B. Anthony, Beriah Green, Gerrit Smith, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Julia Ward Howe, Lucretia Mott and Frederick Douglass. The text specifically discusses slavery, abolitionists, the Civil War and the Underground Railroad.
Other material includes large lists of local residents and participants, ethnic and nationality groups represented in the finale, the Pageant Chorus, musical numbers, Roscoe Conkling Park, and the song “My Old Home Town.”
The front cover has an attractive color illustration and is inscribed at the top “Edward S. Barton, August 7, 1914.” Back cover features the “Utica the Magnificent” emblem. Printed by Childs Print, Utica, New York.
