Original 1913 real photo postcard showing the devastating Great Flood in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
This dramatic street scene shows several men standing in deep floodwater beside a rowboat, with homes, utility poles, commercial buildings and stacks of lumber visible in the background. The large painted advertisement on the brick building at right reads “The Old Reliable.”
I was able to identify this scene more specifically: it is Superior Street looking west toward Webster Street in Fort Wayne. The lumber visible at right belonged to the Jacob Klett & Sons Planing Mill, and the brick building at the right edge was associated with the Chicago Rug Company. The painted advertisement is believed to have been for Bull Durham “The Old Reliable” smoking tobacco
Unused divided-back real photo postcard. Condition shows substantial age-related surface loss/flaking, spotting, scratches, edge and corner wear and toning as pictured. Despite the condition, the principal image and rescue-boat scene remain strong.
