The French government authorized the company which had a capital of $100,000 publicly subscribed to proceed on its prodigious task. By 1889, 12 miles of the canal has been cut. Then came the collapse. On investigation by the French government, it was discovered that through graft, bribery and fraud the company had gotten away with fully $260,000,000. De Lesseps died December 7 1894 of a broken heart due it is said to the disgrace brought on him by the failure of his company to do what it had set out to accomplish.
