Up for sale is a remarkably well-preserved piece of early American travel memorabilia: an antique celluloid souvenir pinback button from the historicBetsy Ross Housein Philadelphia. The front displays a detailed, vibrant illustration of the home where the first American flag was made, flanked by two flags.The reverse features a highly collectible stamped metal backplate identifying it as a product ofThe Whitehead & Hoag Co., the historic pioneers of the celluloid pinback button. Suspended from a ribbon extension is a miniature dark-metal replica of theLiberty Bell, featuring the raised text"Liberty Bell"on the side and its original clapper inside. Finding an early 1900s Whitehead & Hoag variant with the original strap and bell completely intact is incredibly uncommon. The strap is very faded.Condition Report:
- Front:Celluloid remains tight and glossy. Bright, unfaded colors with crisp artwork alignment.
- Reverse:Stamped Whitehead & Hoag metal backplate is crisp and highly legible with standard, authentic light age patina. The original leather strap shows age but is fully intact and flexible. The miniature bell hangs securely and rings.
