Trade reviewCondition: Antique magazine is in good-minus condition for being 124 years old! Tight binding. Cover has moderate wear and soiling with slight foxing. Inside pages are mostly clean with minor foxing spots on page ends. No moisture stains or page tears. The separate supplement is in good condition and looks like I was the first person to unfold it in 124 years. Slight age toning of pages, as expected. See photos.About. The National Builder was a prominent American trade publication focused on architecture, carpentry and the construction industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Published primarily out of Chicago, the magazine served as an essential resource for contractors, builders, and tradesmen during a period of massive urban expansion and housing booms in the United States.Under prominent editors such as Fred T. Hodgson, the magazine acted as a highly practical manual. In the early 1900s, it notably featured: Fold-out blueprints and architectural plans: Every issue came with comprehensive, scale drawings of contemporary homes (e.g., "The Webb House" in 1911). Estimating guides: It broke down the literal costs of materials—ranging from balloon framing, brick, and cement to plumbing fixtures and hardwood. Industrial advertisements: It contained an extensive marketplace of ads for modern tools, specialized machinery, and building materials, capturing the rapid evolution of early 20th-century construction technology.
