Antique 18th-century Quadrille gaming counter and scoring box, probably French or Spa (present-day Belgium), dating approximately to the second half of the 1700s.This small hinged box represents the clubs suit and would originally have been one of four corresponding suit boxes contained within a larger Quadrille gaming ensemble. The lid incorporates a rotating scoring dial with a clubs emblem and numbered scoring window. The red painted/japanned wooden body retains remnants of gilt and chinoiserie-style decoration, including a heavily worn animal or bird-like motif on the underside. The interior is painted black and retains its period brass fittings.Included are 20 matching club-marked bone-type gaming counters, decorated on both faces: 17 elongated pieces and 3 shorter rectangular pieces. These correspond to forms of gaming counters historically used for Quadrille. Original completeness is unknown.Approximate dimensions: 3¼ × 2¼ inches.Condition is consistent with considerable age, including substantial surface and decorative wear, losses to the finish, scratches, edge wear and oxidation/tarnish to the metal fittings. Please examine photographs carefully. No maker’s signature has been identified.Materials have not been laboratory tested; counters and scoring disc are described conservatively as bone-type rather than ivory.
