1899 Complimentary Pass Card to the National Export Exposition in Philadelphia. Measures 4 x 2 3/4 inches.
It reads:
"Complimentary National Export Exposition Opening Excercises, International Commercial Congress, Philadelphia, October 12th, 1899. 2:30 PM. This card is good for the admission of but one person and must be presented at the pass gate." Signed P Wilson, Director General.
Held from September 14 to December 2, 1899, in West Philadelphia, the exposition was not a typical World’s Fair focused on amusement. Instead, it was an aggressive, targeted trade convention co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Commercial Museum and the Franklin Institute.
- The Goal: The exposition was engineered to showcase American-made industrial machinery, agricultural tools, and manufactured goods to foreign buyers, proving the United States could compete directly with European empires.
- The October 12th Date: The card is uniquely historic because October 12, 1899, was the formal grand opening of the International Commercial Congress, a massive diplomatic summit embedded within the expo.
On that date, delegates, trade ministers, and ambassadors from over 40 nations gathered in Philadelphia. The "Opening Exercises" the card granted access to featured a monumental national address. President William McKinley was originally slated to open the congress, but due to his schedule, the opening ceremony was presided over by high-ranking cabinet members, foreign dignitaries, and the Governor of Pennsylvania.
