Messrs. H.F. Cant & Co. was a late 19th-century drugstore located in Guelph, Ontario, deeply embedded in the local commerce of the era. The proprietor, Howard F. Cant (1871–1956), was originally from Galt, Ontario.
Location: The pharmacy was situated at 20 Lower Wyndham Street in Guelph. Today, this historic building still stands at what is now 20 Wyndham Street North.
Stationery and Postcards: In the late 19th century, selling postage and postcards required strict government authorization. On February 1, 1897, the Guelph Mercury reported that the official authority to sell postage stamps and postcards—previously granted to W.G. Smith—was officially transferred to H.F. Cant & Co..
Local Prominence: Cant was an avid curler. In 1898, he proudly displayed the newly purchased $350 Sleeman Trophy, a curling prize donated by famous brewer George Sleeman, in the prominent front window of his drugstore.
