Original 1897 advertising calendar issued by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), one of America’s best-known early grocery and tea companies.
This complete Victorian-era calendar consists of six large illustrated sheets, with two months represented on each sheet for the full January through December 1897 year. Each page features an elaborate color illustration of a fashionable Victorian woman in a seasonal setting.
Each sheet is marked:
“Compliments of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company – 225 Stores in U.S.”
The lower margin is also printed:
“Copyright, 1896, by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. N.Y.”
Scenes include a woman relaxing beside a fireplace, a rainy-day scene with umbrella, gardening among roses, a summer outdoor scene, grape harvesting and a winter scene feeding birds.
The detailed multicolor printing and large-format artwork make the individual sheets highly decorative, but this example is especially desirable because all six matching sheets covering the complete 1897 calendar year have remained together.
Condition is antique/preowned with expected age-related toning, discoloration, scattered staining/soiling, surface wear and edge/corner wear. The original hanging/binding cord is no longer present, so the six sheets are loose. Original punched hanging holes remain. Colors and illustrations remain attractive considering the calendar is approximately 129 years old. Please review all photographs closely as they are an important part of the condition description.
A wonderful piece of late-19th-century American advertising ephemera with crossover appeal to collectors of A&P memorabilia, Victorian advertising, antique calendars, grocery and tea advertising, chromolithographic-style prints and Victorian fashion imagery.
Complete six-sheet set with all 12 months present. Sold together as found; sheets will not be separated.
