Up for sale is an authentic, structurally complete 1893 World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago World's Fair) New York Souvenir Badge. This two-piece historic medal features a top header bar with a highly detailed clasped-hands (shaking hands) friendship motif above a banner reading "NEW-YORK".
Suspended by its two original, unbroken connecting chains is a dark round medallion. The center showcases a beautiful, raised gold-gilt shield intricately depicting the iconic Administration Building dome designed by Richard Morris Hunt. The shield is crowned by a spread-wing American eagle and bordered by the embossed text: "WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION 1893".
Key Details, Condition & Authenticity Features:
• Reverse Stamping: Crisp period hallmark reading "PAT. APPL'D FOR" is stamped under the header bar.
• Original Hardware: Features its authentic 1890s period tube hinge, elongated pin stem, and a simple open C-catch clasp.
• Pin Status: The pin stem is straight and firmly seated/latched inside the C-catch. The pin mechanism does not easily pop out of the clasp, keeping the badge securely closed as a single, solid display piece. No attempt has been made to force or pry it open to protect the antique integrity.
• Aesthetic Condition: The piece is uncleaned and retains its beautiful, authentic dark antique patina/tarnish on the lower medallion, which collectors highly desire. There is light, natural verdigris around the reverse solder points consistent with its 130+ year age.
