Daniel Stern founded The American Artisan in Chicago in 1880 and built it into the standard weekly for the tin, stove, sheet metal, and hardware trades. From offices on Dearborn Street he covered pattern work, warm air furnaces, jobber prices, and the men who sold them. Two dollars a year bought a subscription, and the paper reached dealers across the country every Saturday.
The card is a working piece of that operation. Daniel Stern sends a message, flagging a mention of the recipient\'s business on page 18 and soliciting news items for free publication. Trade papers ran on exactly this exchange — notice given, notice returned, copy supplied by the readers themselves.
Stern\'s paper outlived him. It absorbed the Hardware Record and published as the American Artisan and Hardware Record, later narrowing to warm air heating and sheet metal, and it was still coming out under the American Artisan name into 1970 — 90 years after a Chicago publisher first put his own name at the bottom of the page.
