The painting later became the frontispiece of Remingtons celebrated 1895 book *Pony Tracks*, one of the defining collections of Western American art and writing.The composition depicts a small remnant of U.S. Cavalry soldiers — cartridge belts nearly empty, sabers stuck in the ground — making a final desperate stand against unseen attackers.
