USPS will hold if not available day of delivery.Up for Sale is a June 14, 1889 3-Page Letter on U.S. House of Representatives Stationary from PA Democratic Congressman Sam J. Randall (1828-1890). He served as the 29th Speaker of the House 1875-1881 and was a contender for the Presidential Democratic Nomination twice in this political career. Randall served in Congress from 1863 until his death in 1890. When the new Congress began in 1889, he received special permission to be sworn in from his bed, to which he as confined. This letter is dated June 14 and well after the new congress began, it was written while confined to his bed.

The letter contains reference to free trade and Democratic return to power in the House. Randall supported tariffs as a way to protect his voting base in Pennsylvania. I have tried to decipher the writing as best I could with the help of several translation apps. Wording may not be exact but shows the context of the letter.

Dear Sir,

Your recent favor has been received and in reply to your queries. I can only say that for the present we must offere our time & hope for the best. The men who willfully or through ignorance lost the Party the defeat should be modest & retire. We must return to the sagacious teachings (2nd page) of the fathers and shape out course in accordance therewith. Then we can secure the confidence of the people and success will be sure. The opening of the next Congress will place the sizing of the near future, whether for defeat of victory. If we smartly brush aside & away the humbug of free trade, harmony may be standard and the road opened to Democratic return to (3rd page) power. So I can only say - wait and be patient. Yours truly, Sam J. RandallI will weatherproof for safe shipping.

Each page is 9 3/4" x 7 1/2" and in fine condition with no damage or issues. I will weatherproof the package and will require signature confirmation with the USPS.
