This original 1884–1885 Indenture Deed documents the sale of 92 acres of unseated land located in Washington Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The property was sold by the Commissioners of Schuylkill County—Daniel Boyer, John Leahy, and A. J. Shortall—to Henry C. Reeser, who purchased the land at a public tax sale conducted by County Treasurer Henry Keil. The formal printed and handwritten indenture is signed and sealed by all commissioners, the treasurer, and witnesses including John Snyder and M. Bordland, J.P.
Accompanying the main deed is a handwritten 1885 endorsement in which Henry C. Reeser, acting as trustee for Jacob G. Rhoads, transfers and assigns all his “right, title, and interest” in the property to Rhoads on April 2, 1885. The folded deed wrapper reads:
“Deed. Commissioners of Schuylkill County to Henry C. Reeser for 92 acres unseated land, Washington Township. Deed in the name of Henry Keil.”
A fine example of 19th-century Pennsylvania land conveyancing and tax-sale procedure, complete with all original signatures, seals, and the ornate printed “This Indenture” heading typical of the 1880s. Suitable for collectors of Pennsylvania land deeds, Schuylkill County history, or genealogical research involving the Reeser, Keil, or Rhoads families.
