Charming letter written by Henry Schuman-Leclerq of Dresden, Germany, expressing his interest in the advertised position of French and German teacher at the High School of Charleston. The original newspaper ad is attached. At the time of his application, Henry was residing at the St. Denis Hotel in lower Manhattan. He admits that he’s light on experience but still perfectly capable of fulfilling the school’s 12, 1880
Statement:
I, the undersigned, am 26 years old, and was educated at the [?] College at Dresden, which I entered at ten, leaving it at the age of twenty. Whilst there I passed through all the classes up to the second, which I left with the qualification to enter the first [?].
Reason: Ill health.
I assisted my father, who was professor of the French language and literature at the [?] College in Dresden, Saxony for several years in the correction of themes and exercises written by the scholars of all classes. Have also taught French and German to American and English persons, living abroad (Dresden) for several years and with success prepared a younger brother of mine for college.
While my experience as a teacher may be limited, yet I have no hesitancy in saying that I can with satisfaction to the board and credit to myself fill the position of a teacher of the French and German languages at the High School of Charleston.
